October 2008 E-Update
Angie Velasco
It was one of those days when I was feeling sluggish. There
has been a teacher’s strike going on here for about six weeks now. There is
horrible traffic in different parts of the city as they have been blocking
streets and intersections to get the government’s attention with their demands.
I have been walking to and from the church for exercise and to avoid all the
commotion and traffic.
I was supposed to start The Navigator 2:7 Discipleship
series with 4 gals last Monday September 22. I forced myself to get up, changed
my clothes and decided I would go no matter how I felt. As usual, I arrived
about 20 minutes early to prepare my room, prepare the snacks and get all my
manuals ready to go. To my surprise, two
gals came early, 10 minutes before 6 pm the scheduled meeting time --- very
unusual in this culture where the norm is to arrive 15 minutes to 1 hour late.
I was expecting the one gal but I was not expecting a new
gal. I asked her, “Eres Cristiana?”(Are you a Christian?). I needed to know as
my class that I was starting is designed for Christians. Her response was firm,
“Soy Católica!” (I am Catholic!). I knew
then… that I had to do something before I started the class. I had 10 minutes
to share the gospel with this new gal before everyone arrived for the
Discipleship class. I pulled my favorite gospel tracts from my purse and asked
if both of them would read these with me while we were waiting for the other
gals to come. I knew this new gal did not come to my class by accident. I knew
the Holy Spirit brought her to my class even though the Holy Spirit did not
tell me ahead of time. He did not have to. I am just supposed to be ready all
the time to share the gospel whenever I have the opportunity to do so. We read
the gospel tracts and when it came to the prayer portion to receive Jesus as
her Lord and Savior, I asked her if she would repeat the prayer after me. She
did and after the prayer, there were tears in her eyes. Tears of joy… for the grace and mercy the
Lord had shown her. By this time, it was 6:30 pm and all the other gals arrived
and gave their excuses for coming late. They all know I start my classes on
time and end on time except for this “unusual” Monday.
I finished the class at 8 p.m. rejoicing that the Lord gave
me grace to come to my scheduled class as it meant the course of someone’s
eternal destiny. I called the gal who brought the new gal 24 hours later to
find out if it was a real conversion. I often see a hunger for God’s Word when
people sincerely pray to receive Jesus. She said, “Actually she is on her way
here right now as we will do our homework together”. I asked how the new gal liked the class. She
responded saying, “my cousin has never felt so much joy in her entire life
until last Monday!” PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!
Thank you for your faithful prayers, love and support. It
always means someone’s eternal destiny is at stake! Pray for me to be faithful
until He comes again.
